Ah, the Inexperienced Homeowner

January 14th, 2009

After five years with this dishwasher, I just discovered it has a trap I can remove and clean out. Had you seen five years’ worth of horrifyingly rotten food like I just did, you would no longer question where that odor in the kitchen—the one I keep obsessing over, and hunting for, and scouring things to try and exorcise—is coming from. It was like a giant light-bulb appeared suspended over my head, and it was bright and smart, and then it fell on my noggin, hard, and the sound it made when it hit was not [thud] but [duh].

You didn’t find any tricycles amongst the rotten food, did you? I should check to see if our dishwasher has a trap. Ever since I got back from my trip the kitchen has smelled a little funky, but I can’t figure out why…

Dishwashers have a trap? (And I’ve had a dishwasher for 30 years!) I’m going right down and look at mine! Thanks for the tip!

Housecleaning can be an exciting adventure – kinda like big game hunting! You never know what you’re going to find lurking in corners and under furniture. And just wait until you see the creative messes that Violet comes up with! :-)

Where was the trap? I am also unaware of such a thing, but it might explain a lot…

I must be married to the only person (besides the Maytag repair-man), who knows that almost ALL appliances come with some kind of trap. She keeps the dishwasher trap cleaned at least monthly. I think it is her sence of smell. She just begins to smell the funky dishwasher and she has her screwdriver out and empties the trap.

At least you do not have ayard to maintain!

    Gross.

Hmm, I think you just solved our two-inches-of-standing-water-after-washing problem.

I looked for a trap and couldn’t find one. But I believe it exists! I almost don’t want to find it at this point…

You still have to clean out the trap, but I love this stuff—using it once a month kept my last 15-year old dishwasher going well past it’s prime–http://www.idealtruevalue.com/servlet/the-16768/Detail
